Night/Day Vacay for Two

Thursday morning I walk into work, sit at my desk, take a sip of my iced vanilla latte, and pull up my email to find a message from my hubby, “Want to go spend the night in a train car tomorrow night?” My answer was an immediate YES!!!

After a very long and stressful week for me and for him we decided a night and day away would do us some good so come Friday late afternoon we had our bags packed and were on our way to Chattanooga.

We’ve come to realize that Chattanooga is one of the best places to go for an overnight or weekend getaway because there is almost always something to do there. Even when there isn’t it’s nice to go on a small getaway and just be together away from work, teens, and errands. With our upcoming trip to Savannah Georgia we thought this would do us some good.

After a short drive we arrive in Chattanooga only to find that the road our hotel is on was closed so we had to take a detour. Cool no problem right? Wrong! It was a half hour detour around the block then finally we pulled up to our hotel. We never could tell what had the street closed but let me tell you having Walker Street closed off was BAD!

The Chattanooga Choo Choo

Once we arrived at the Chattanooga Choo Choo and all was good in the world again. We had an easy and quick check in then we were handed our keys to a train car at the end of the walkway that was facing the beautiful gardens there. Most would ask, “A train car?” I know it doesn’t really scream ROMANCE! But that assumption is wrong my friends. My husband and I had been there a year ago and decided we had to go back. The train car is not only cool as hell but it’s romantic also. The bed is at the end of the train car taking up most of the back and they put a couple of chairs in there and a flat screen. They have free WiFi which is a definite plus. Only down side, the bathrooms aren’t the best. They definitely could use some updating. They are small which is fine but in ours the tile in front of the toilet seemed like it could give way in a second after you step on it but honestly I don’t have any complaints because I mean come on they are renovated train cars not a 5 star hotel.

The train car is mostly good for just two people as it only contains a queen size bed however they do offer a pull out bed as well but I can’t imagine trying to squeeze in more people or kids into this single room train car. They do have an actual hotel on the property for those with a big family so you can still experience everything but staying in an actual train car.

The grounds are beautiful! Although be fair warned that they light the lanterns every night and in the summer it can be really hot walking by them but the beauty of it is worth it to me. Then add some very loud frogs from the pond to the mix and if you are a person that is hard to fall asleep a few of these things may bother you at 11pm when you are trying to doze off. After the week I had I had no trouble in this area.

Upon arriving we enjoyed the train car a bit, got settled in, then decided to go eat. We went back to the same restaurant we had been before, Blue Orleans. I absolutely LOVE this restaurant! It’s right across the street and down a bit from the Chattanooga Choo Choo and it’s some great food! It’s small but they definitely know how to make it feel intimate for two people. It has a wonderful New Orleans feel and our waitress was amazing! We ordered our drinks after her suggestions then ordered two Po Boys. Hubby ordered a shrimp po boy and I ordered a grilled chicken. Unfortunately we were starving and didn’t even think to take a picture of the food but believe me when I say it’s delicious!

After dinner we walked down the street to Chattanooga Whiskey. They were packed with more people waiting outside so we ventured next door to The Hot Chocolatier. They have chocolate everywhere! They have chocolate covered gummy bears, peanuts, malt balls, truffles galore, and even gelato. If you have a sweet tooth this is the place to go!

We bought way too many sweets then headed back to our train car. We walked around the gardens, enjoyed the atmosphere and just relaxed. We rocked in a couple rocking chairs and watched as some kids played on the giant checkers board across the way. It was a beautiful night to just kick back and relax.

After another walk around the property we made our way back to our train car and called it a night. We fell asleep pretty quickly although we were awakened around midnight because we could hear one the guests in the train car behind us talking away on her phone. No joke it was like she was sitting next to us but she didn’t talk long and we were back to sleep in no time. Again you have to keep in mind that these are train cars so some things like that are to be expected.

We woke the following morning and got ready for the day. We were going to go to their new place The Frothy Monkey but the line was literally out the door so we changed our minds but if you planned to stay a weekend then I would recommend it for sure. It looks amazing. Since we only had a short time we decided to go ahead and make our way downtown.

This time there was no closed roads so we got to the aquarium very quickly. We opted out of going to the aquarium this time since we’ve gone hundreds of times before but if you’ve never been I highly recommend it. When we arrived downtown we found out there was an Ironman competition going on which was cool because they had vendors set up everywhere! There was a small market right outside the aquarium where people were selling homemade soaps, jewelry, and clothes then across the way there were vendors selling food and Ironman merchandise.

We walked around then made our way down Broad Street to the MoonPie store and Rocket Fizz store. We killed some time before lunch and planned out what all we wanted to purchase then began walking towards our lunch spot. We were a little early so we walked into the book store next to it to find a nice older lady with her two dogs. She sold yarn and tons of books some dated back to the 1800s. It was awesome! Once we realized it was 11 o’clock we went to our lunch spot Lupi’s. This place has the best pizza in Chattanooga hands down! It could very well be the best pizza in all of Tennessee because I love it! Once again we failed at getting any pictures of the food. I know, bad blogger! I’m learning here people, bear with me. 😉

After we finished eating we went back to the MoonPie and Rocket Fizz stores and bought the few things we picked out then made our way back to the car. We did put our stuff away then decided to walk just a bit more before heading home. We walked to the river then got a lemonade then made our way home.

I don’t have one bad thing to say about our getaway. It was perfect! It was nice to get away from everything just for a little bit. Don’t get me wrong I love my kids but I don’t think anyone would disagree that some time away to enjoy time with your spouse without any interruptions is a good thing especially for a marriage. It gave us some time to reconnect a bit and just be with each other.

For just a 24 hour (literally 24 hour) getaway it was PERFECT. I loved every second of it and made sure to soak up as much as I could before returning to reality. I highly recommend the Chattanooga Choo Choo for a romantic getaway but if it’s just two of you definitely stay in a train car believe me it’s worth it! If you go check out Blue Orleans and Lupi’s too if you have time. You won’t be disappointed.

My husband has the best ideas for sure! This small adventure was exactly what we needed.

Now time to start planning our trip to Savannah soon! Stay tuned for that one.
